The Luxembourg Federation of Mutual Insurance was formed in 1924 to act as the supervisorial organization for the many mutual societies in Luxembourg.
These stamps show four seals from the 13th and 14th centuries:
These stamps depict sculptures by famous Luxembourg sculptors Auguste Trémont and Lucien Wercollier. Trémont is known for his works of art relating to animals; the deer sculpture on the 4F stamp is from 1936. Wercollier is known for his many abstract works, many of them quite large; the sculpture on the 8F stamp stands in front of the European Court of Justice
The Winston Churchill memorial was inaugurated on October 23, 1973 and honors the great leader of Great Britain who died in 1965.
The new Luxembourg International Fair grounds are located in Luxembourg-Kirchberg and cover an area of approximately 150,000 square meters.
Theis the Blind was a wandering minstrel who was well known for propogating the Luxembourg dialect through popular songs. His real name was Mathias Schou.
These stamps show two examples of Gothic Art in Luxembourg. The first is a statue from the church of Hollenfels showing St. Cecily and St. Valerien being crowned by an angel. The second is the interior of the church of Septfontaines.
The UPU is an international organization that facilitates the exchange of mail between nations. It is a forum in which countries can discuss and work out problems that interfere with the free flow of mail among them. The UPU was formed in Berne, Switzerland in 1874 and is now an agency of the United Nations.
This stamp commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Benelux customs union.
Differdange is today one of the most important towns of Luxembourg, thanks to the expansion of the iron and steel industry. It is here that the famous broad-winged gray girders are made at the modern ARBED steelworks.
These miniatures are from the famous Gospel-book "Codex Aureus Epternacensis", a masterpiece from the scriptorium at the Echternach abbey, now in the Germanic Museum at Nuremberg.
The Benedictine Abbey of Echternach, founded in 698 by St. Willibrord, maintained a famous scriptorium, a workshop which brought forth an impressive array of manuscripts and illuminated texts. The Abbey itself was closed in 1897 during the French Revolution and the confiscated works sold and scattered throughout Europe. The Codex, a Gospel-book which is written entirely in gold letters and is richly illuminated, was created around 1040, at a time when the Salic emperors commissioned works at the Abbey.
This souvenir sheet commemorates the 50th anniversary of the issuance of the first Caritas charity stamps in 1924. It shows the ivory Christ on the Cross sculpture which forms the central part of the superb cover of the "Codex Aureus Epternacensis". It was created for the Echternach Abbey in the workshops of Archbishop Egbert of Trier, between 983 and 991.
